Systems Administrator – University Academic Computing Technologies




Reports to: Associate Director for Academic Systems Development.

Purpose: The holder of this position is responsible for the administration and management of core systems an...d applications, establishment of procedures and policies to ensure security and operational stability, and develops, tests and implements disaster recovery plans.

Principal Accountabilities:



• Monitors and manages system resources including CPU usage, disk usage, tape backup systems, and response times to maintain operational stability on core systems.

• Troubleshoots and diagnoses production problems; corrects identified problems.

• Installing and maintaining system and application software and keeping patches up-to-date.

• Works closely with applications development team in roll-out of new software applications.

• Performs regular backup of systems and data to variety of media.

• Restores systems and data in event of system failure or other unforeseen disaster.

• Provides regular statistical reports on usage, traffic and user trends for public facing web-based applications.

• Performs systems security administration functions, including user accounts and management of permissions.



Requirements:

Education:

• BSc in computer science or other technical degree from and accredited college or university.



Experience:

• Minimum four years of experience in relevant field.



Skills:

• Very Good command of spoken and written English and Arabic

• Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Windows Server 2003/2008; knowledge of Unix & Linux is an asset

• Excellent knowledge of administration of one or more of the following databases: MS Access, MySQL and MS SQL Server.

• Programming skills in one or more of the following programming languages: Java, Visual Basic.NET, C, C++ and C#.

• Excellent knowledge of Web Servers – in particular IIS; knowledge of Apache is an asset

• Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Sharepoint 2007, Systems Management Server, Communications Server,

• MCSA or MCSE certification desirable

• Ability to work and contribute in team projects.

• Ability to conduct research in a chosen domain
